The minimum wage for those in Urban Gitega and Bujumbura is 160 Burundian Franc a day and 150 Burundian Franc a day for those in rural places.
Wages must be paid in legal cash on a regular basis, at the agreed-upon time, and at the agreed-upon location, according to the Labour Code. The amount of pay cannot be less than the minimum wage. Unless the worker agrees differently, wages are paid directly to him or her.
Wages may also be transferred to a bank account or an authorized financial institution stated in writing by the worker, according to the law.
On a working day, the employer is required to pay salaries in cash.
Payments for the month must be made within eight days after the end of the month in which the salary is due. It is also the employer's responsibility to pay agreed salary on a regular and timely basis. Wage periods might be hourly, daily, weekly, or monthly.
In Burundi, employees pay income taxes as follows;
Less than BIF 1.8 million- 0%
BIF 1.8 million- BIF 3.6 million – 20%
More than BIF 3.6 million – 30%
Additionally, the employer contributes 6% to social security while the employee contributes 4%.
Parental Leave
All-female employees are granted 12 weeks of maternity leave, split halfway between before and after birth. Additionally, male employees are entitled to 4 days of paternity leave, which is paid at 100% of the employee’s salary.
In the course of termination, severance is not a requirement in Burundi.
Notice
Notice is required in Burundi as follows;
Less than three months- 1 month notice
Between 3- 5 years- 1.5 months’ notice
Between 5-10 years- 2 months’ notice
More than ten years – 3 Months' notice.
