Leaves

Annual leave

A full-time employee is obligated to 15 days of leave annually.

Maternity Leave

Female employees are eligible for 12 weeks of paid Maternity leave. However, six weeks should be over pre-birth and the other 6 post-birth. The employer is required to compensate them at least 50% of their ordinary wage rate. After resuming work, the female employee is allowed one hour of unpaid leave to care for the offspring for a year. A health provider's certificate is an eligibility requirement.

Paternity Leave

Paternity leave is not administratively required in Botswana.

Sick Leave

Employees receive an annual 20- day paid sick leave. For eligibility, the worker should present a health provider's certificate.

Termination process

Termination methodology differs depending on the employment contracts but employers are required to provide written notice. The notice duration is equal to the worker's pay period.

Notice Period

The notice time in Botswana:

  • Minimum notice is the same as the income period.
  • There is no notice period if an employee is incriminated in adverse misconduct or criminal activities.

Severance

Directors, administrators, board members, senior supervisors, and skilled workforce are allowed severance after providing 60 ongoing employment month services. The wage rate is similar to a normal daily rate per month in the initial 60 months and two days for every extra month worked. After retirement, workers eligible for a pension are not eligible for the perk.

Probationary Period

Unskilled workers should serve a three-month probationary period.
