Gearing Up for Post Performance Review Interventions

It’s that time of year again ~ performance reviews are in, and changes are on the horizon! As we gear up to implement post performance review interventions (think: cost of living adjustments - COLA, grade reviews, and promotions) this April, here’s the lowdown on what’s happening, why it matters, and what you can expect next.

Why it Matters

We’re all about making data-driven decisions. That means relying on multiple input, like OKR results, the 9-Box Matrix, competency assessments, and Talent Round Table (TRT) discussions ~ to ensure our compensation and promotion decisions are fair, objective, and well-informed.

Let’s face it ~ performance reviews are subjective by nature. But by combining these tools, we can close that gap and make decisions that reflect both individual performance and future potential.

What’s Happening Next

  1. 9-Box Grid Mapping

Every team lead will be conducting a thorough review of their team’s performance and potential using the 9-Box Matrix. The 9-Box Grid will guide us in determining fair and consistent decisions for COLA, grade reviews, and promotions.

  1. Competency Assessment ~ for Promotions

Promotions will be guided by a structured competency assessment using the Radford framework. For an employee to be considered for a promotion, they must:

  • Have reached ‘Mastery’ at their current level.
  • Demonstrate at least one (1) competency at the next level.
  • Be assessed based on their demonstrated skills and readiness ~ not just tenure or effort.

This approach ensures that promotions are based on merit and capability, helping us build stronger, more capable teams.

  1. Talent Round Table (TRT) Discussions ~ for Promotions

Wondering what a Talent Round Table (TRT) is? It’s essentially a structured forum where team leads/managers, C-suit, and People come together to discuss and validate promotion recommendations. Think of it as a high-stakes strategy meeting ~ data meets discussion, and decisions get locked in!

We’ve tentatively scheduled TRT discussions for the first week of April (before the Easter break). The goal? To finalize any changes in time for the April payroll.

Our managers have gone through extensive training to guide them through this process and ensure that decisions are objective, consistent, and aligned with our goals. Ultimately, these interventions are designed to support our two key business objectives for the year:

  • Profitability – Ensuring we are rewarding high performance while maintaining financial health.
  • Customer Obsession – Strengthening our teams so we can deliver even better service to our customers.

Need clarification or have questions? Do feel free to reach out to us or your Manager. We are looking forward to a smooth and successful process.

It’s not been all process and professionalism for Zipho of course. She’s been exploring Kenya!
